Undetected diabetes may double risk of heart attack, periodontitis

New research finds an intriguing link between undetected blood sugar disorders and the development of heart attacks and severe gum disease.

Previous research has pointed to a connection between periodontitis — a chronic condition that affects the gums and bones that support the teeth — and diabetes.

The latter is a major risk factor for the former, with data showing that people with diabetes are three times more likely to develop periodontitis.

Also, the risk of mortality from ischemic heart disease combined with diabetes-related kidney complications is three times higher in people who have both diabetes and severe periodontitis, compared with people who only have diabetes.

Now, new research examines whether there are also links that connect undetected blood sugar disorders — known as dysglycemia — with a heart attackand severe gum disease.

Dr. Anna Norhammar, who is a cardiologist and associate professor at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Medicine, in Solna, Sweden, led the new research. The results appear in the journal Diabetes Care.
Heart attack, periodontitis risk doubled

Dr. Norhammar and colleagues used data from a preexisting study called PAROKRANK, which included 805 participants who had experienced a heart attack — or myocardial infarction — and 805 age- and sex-matched healthy control participants.

Manage Your Diabetic Retinopathy

#DiabeticRetinopathy | #DiabetesCongress2019 | #December 3-4, 2019 #Tokyo _Japan
Diabetes and diabetes-related complications are on the rise. India and China are global leaders having the highest number of people with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Diabetes, a multisystem disease, can affect small blood vessels (eye, kidney and nerves) larger blood vessels in the body (heart and brain).

Diabetes can cause vision loss and blindness affecting various parts of the eye. Studies say Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) could potentially be an epidemic in India in future, given the increasing number of diabetics, especially in urban areas. The Diabetes Atlas, 2015, published by the International Diabetes Federation said that 8.7% Indians — around seven crore — are diabetic. The number is expected to go up to 12 crore by 2040.

As per data from various epidemiological and screening programmes, the proportion of diabetic eye diseases in people with DM include refractive errors in 60% (needing power glasses), cataract in 40%, glaucoma 5% and Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) affecting small vessels of retina in 20%. LVPEI being a tertiary referral centre, about 70% of OPD patients are those suffering from DR. And out of all DR patients, 30-40% have irreversible vision loss.

Management of DR:

The three important numbers to remember in the management of DR are:

• Hba1c (Glycosylated Haemoglobin) level should be ≤ 7 gm%. Hba1c levels help us to know the three months control of diabetes. It also has an advantage as its estimation is not influenced by food intake
• Blood pressure levels should be at ≤ 130/80 mm of Hg
• Serum lipid levels should be normal

Type 2 diabetes plays havoc on one’s health with the increase of blood sugar levels. The symptoms of diabetes does not just affect a person physically but can affect you emotionally too. It occurs when the blood glucose levels are too high. In type 2 diabetes, the body doesn’t make enough insulin and when too much glucose stays in the blood it doesn’t reach the cells properly. This causes major health problems such as blurred vision, sores that don’t heal properly and a numbness or tingling feeling in your hands or feet.

Diabetes can affect a person’s mood causing rapid and severe changes. Feelings such as irritability, high emotions that causes a person to cry for no reason or even anger are common symptoms of type 2 diabetes. The reason for this is due to the brain not getting enough glucose.

As the brain is the center for thoughts and emotions, it needs glucose to function properly and if it doesn’t function properly it can cause your brain to go haywire.

Ways to help with the change in mood caused by type 2 diabetes:

Expressing your emotions to loved ones and work colleagues is the first step to helping you feel better. Offloading some of what you’re feeling has many benefits. Sharing the burden will help you feel less alone and can take a weight off your mind.

Having to pay close attention to what you eat can be stressful and some people find they eat more when they are stressed. The food we eat has a major impact on how we feel as many processed foods and saturated fats will make you feel worse. Choosing a healthy well-balanced diet will not only help you blood sugar levels but will also make you feel better.

Exercising makes you feel better as the endorphins released will elevate your mood. When you exercise the insulin resistance is decreased and the cells can use the glucose in the body more effectively. Exercise will not only help you physically but emotionally too.

Type 2 diabetes: Best bread to eat if you want to lower your blood sugar

Discuss about Type 2 Diabetes connect with us and visit our link:
https://asia.diabetesexpo.com/

TYPE 2 diabetes is a condition that causes a person’s blood sugar (glucose) levels to become too high, and left untreated, more serious and sometimes life-threatening problems can occur. Diet can play a big part in controlling blood sugar, but when it comes to bread, which is best?

Type 2 diabetes is a common condition that can trigger symptoms such as needing to pee more than usual, feeling thirsty all the time and feeling very tired. But because these symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell, the condition can be difficult to identify. If you experience these symptoms or unexplained weight loss, itching around the penis or vagina and blurred vision you should see your GP. Type 2 diabetes complications that occur if the condition is left untreated include problems with the nerves, kidneys, eyes, feet, and heart attack and stroke. When it comes to managing your blood sugar level, whether you have the condition or not, it’s important to eat a healthy diet.

Sugar, fat and salt should be kept to a minimum and your should also make sure not to skip meals and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. When it comes to one of the staples of many people’s diet, bread, which is best for blood sugar levels?

Many breads are high in carbohydrates which can quickly raise blood sugar levels. But, pumpernickel bread and 100 per cent stone-ground whole wheat breads have low GI scores.GI stands for glycemic index and is a relative ranking of carbohydrate in foods according to how they affect blood glucose levels.

Pumpernickel and stone-ground whole wheat breads have lower GI scores than regular whole wheat bread because the ingredients go through less processing.

During processing the fibrous outer shells of grains and cereals is removed.

Fibre slows digestion and helps to stabilise blood sugar levels.

A 2014 study found spelt and rye bread used low initial glycemic responses in rats.

Diabetes UK also advises: “Choosing wholegrain options makes sense. They are high in fire, keep you feeling fuller for longer than refined carbohydrates and take longer for the body to break down so blood glucose levels do not ‘spike’ then drop rapidly.”

But if pumpernickel bread doesn’t whet your appetite, wholegrain, granary, spelt and rye bread are also recommended.

Other carbohydrates you should opt for include wholewheat or brown pasta and noodles, basmati or wild rice, porridge oats or muesli, and quinoa, burger wheat, couscous or yam.https://asia.diabetesexpo.com/
